The Trust

The Lawrence Chinese Camp Charitable Trust was established in 2002 by Dr James Ng, the founding Chairman and now patron of the Camp. Click here to read Dr Ng's bio.

Purpose of the Trust

 

​The purpose of the Trust is to:

  • Administer the Lawrence Chinese Camp site, its buildings and its adjacent land.

  • Restore, preserve and sustain the Lawrence Chinese Camp site, its buildings, its heritage and its history.

  • Develop the Lawrence Chinese Camp site and the adjacent land to complement it, for the education and enjoyment of local residents, students, researchers, and domestic and international visitors.

  • Align and coordinate the development of the Lawrence Chinese Camp site with the development of the Lawrence township, the Tuapeka District and Otago region, in the public interest.

  • Preserve, develop and interpret the Lawrence Chinese Camp site consistent with the policies of the Historic Places Trust.

  • Promote knowledge and education about the pioneer history of the Cantonese Chinese in the Camp, Otago and New Zealand through preserving and promoting the provenance of the site.

  • Join in on research into the history of gold mining in Lawrence and the Tuapeka District, without restricting the scope of the foregoing.
